ABSTRACT

This study investigated the parasitic fauna of tambaquis reared in lower Sao Francisco region-Al/SE-Brazil correlating parasitic indices to abiotic and biotic factors. A total of 252 specimens of tambaqui were collected in ten fish farms for parasitological analysis. The parasites were counted, identified and the parasitological indices were determined and correlated to biotic and abiotic factors. Of all collected fish, 65,5 % were parasitized by at least one taxon. Ten taxa were found: Monogeneans, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, trichodinids Piscinoodinium pillulare, Ichthyobodo sp, Dolops carvalhoi, Lernaea cyprinacea, Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus, Henneguya sp. and Myxobolus sp. The higher prevalences were found to monogeneans (49.2%) and Myxobolus sp. (31.5%). Negative correlation of prevalence and biotic factor (weight and length) were observed to monogeneans (r 2 = -0.49, r 2 = -0.43), Myxobolus sp (r²= -0.46; r²= -0.39) and Henneguya sp (r²= -0.41; r²= -0.39). Abiotic factor of temperature presented a negative correlation to prevalence of Lernaea cyprinacea and trichodinids (r= -0.39 e r= -0.33, respectively) and the electric conductivity presented positive correlation to trichodinids (r= 0.40). It was concluded that parasitic fauna of tambaquis cultured in Lower São Francisco region is diversified and the parasitic load dependent on water parameters and fish growth.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is an autosomal recessive disease associated with high levels of branched-chain amino acids. Children with MSUD can present severe neurological damage, but liver transplantation (LT) allows the patient to resume a normal diet and avoid further neurological damage. The use of living related donors has been controversial because parents are obligatory heterozygotes. We report a case of a 2-year-old child with MSUD who underwent a living donor LT. The donor was the patient's mother, and his liver was then used as a domino graft. The postoperative course was uneventful in all three subjects. DNA analysis performed after the transplantation (sequencing of the coding regions of BCKDHA, BCKDHB, and DBT genes) showed that the MSUD patient was heterozygous for a pathogenic mutation in the BCKDHB gene. This mutation was not found in his mother, who is an obligatory carrier for MSUD according to the family history and, as expected, presented both normal clinical phenotype and levels of branched-chain amino acids. In conclusion, our data suggest that the use of a related donor in LT for MSUD was effective, and the liver of the MSUD patient was successfully used in domino transplantation. Routine donor genotyping may not be feasible, because the test is not widely available, and, most importantly, the disease is associated with both the presence of allelic and locus heterogeneity. Further studies with this population of patients are required to expand the use of related donors in MSUD.

ABSTRACT

Esophagitis due to pill ingestion is an uncommon condition. The real incidence is underestimated because it is usually a self limited disorder and the diagnosis is not always established. We report a case of a 17 years old female presenting with an acute onset of pain in the middle chest one week after consumption of doxycycline. Endoscopy confirmed the diagnosis. The antibiotic was withdrawned and ranitidine was administered for seven days. The patient was asymptomatic at the third day of treatment and a control endoscopy at day 45 was normal.

ABSTRACT

The alimentary canal and the reproductive tract of males and females of Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari are described. The alimentary canal of H. hampei showed the crop with several spine-like structures and the midgut with few gastric caeca. We evidenced for the first time that adult females need to feed on coffee in order to produce viable eggs before and during oviposition period. The presence of air bubbles inside the anterior midgut may be due to starvation rather than the response of the environment during flying as previously reported. Two ovaries and the same structures and arrangements common to individuals of the Curculionidae beetles composed the female reproductive system. The male reproductive tract showed a significant difference with respect to other Curculionidae and even other Scolytinae species as it showed a sclerotized aedeagus with several pore-like structures in the terminal portion where sperm is released during mating.

ABSTRACT

Background: In the year 2003, the Ministry of Health replaced rice from the Complementary Nutritional National Program destined to malnourished and in risk children, for a product with higher nutritional value ("Mi Sopita"). Objective: Evaluate the effect of this intervention in the nutritional evolution of children under 6 years-old, in risk or suffering malnutrition. Method: Retrospective cohort of 1.576 children registered in the program 6 months earlier in 300 Primary Care establishments. Analysis of the evolution of anthropometric indicators for a period of 6 months, in function of the initial diagnosis and age. Logistic regressions of multiple factors to determine the variables associated to a better nutritional evolution. Results: 80 percent of cases presented nutritional risk and the rest malnutrition. In 6 months, the median value of change in Z score for weight/age was + 0,3 SD (95 percent IC 0,3-0,3), height/age +0,3 SD (0,3-0,4) and weight/height +0,5 SD (0,3-0,6) in children with initial values < -2 SD. The change was approximately 0,1 SD for the group with nutritional risk. Between 44 percent and 69 percent of the children with malnutrition got partially better or normalized their nutritional status according to the different indicators (p < 0,001). The most determinant factor for better evolution was major initial nutritional deficit (OR 4,4 IC 3,2-6,1 p < 0,001 for weight/age). Conclusions: The program has a positive effect in the recovery of malnourished children and it avoids major nutritional deterioration in children at risk.

ABSTRACT

Introducction: The choledocholithiasis is a frequent complication of gallstone disease. The endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is suitable for its diagnosis and treatment. That approach has both significative morbility and mortality so others methods of diagnosis have been proposed such as intraoperatorycholangiography (IOC) and magnetic resonance cholangiography (MRC), reserving ERCP only for therapy purpose.OBJETIVES: Verify the utility of choledocholithiasis predictors described in literature MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study is a correlational observational transversal prospective approach. It was performed at the Arzobispo Loayza Hospital from August 2004 to January 2005. Many clinical, biochemical and ecographyc predictorsof choledocholithiasis were analyzed in 151 patient underwent to ERCP. In all people under study and analyzing separately patients underwent to cholecystectomy or not previous to ERCP, it was identified some risk factors for choledocholithiasis by means of both univariate and multivariate analysis.RESULTS: The univariate analysis showed a relationships among age, icterus, cholangytis, direct bilirrubin, amylase, lactic deshidrogenasa, ductal dilatation (minor 8mm) and choledocholithiasis. In all groups, the multivariate analysis determined that ductal dilatation by ecography was the unique predictor for choledocholithiasisin the group of patients postoperated.CONCLUSIONS: None single indicator was able to predict with accuracy thecholedocholithiasis. However, the parameters described in the literature are useful in our country.

ABSTRACT

We report a HTLV-I positive infant, whose infection was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction. The infant presented with an acute, severe, generalized eczema, exfoliation and severe erythroderma that yielded to an acute proteic malnutrition and frequent staphyloccocal infections, unresponsive to treatment, since the second month of life. Immunodeficiencies from other origin and other causes of erythroderma were ruled out. The histopathology studies and clinical course yielded to the diagnosis of infective dermatitis associated to HTLV-I. A review of the literature is performed.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The demographic and nutritional transition in Chile has been reflected by a high and growing prevalence of obesity and chronic illnesses related to nutrition. In spite of the efforts made, it is not likely that the country will comply with the health objectives proposals for 2010 to reduce obesity and sedentary tendencies. As part of their functions the National Health Food and Nutrition Advisory Council has recently checked and defined the national priorities in this area. In the Council's opinion, the efforts should be oriented to strengthen the nutritional intervention strategy through the vital cycle, to improve the institutional capacity of the country as far as food is concerned, to review and modernized feeding programmes and to develop a strategic alliance with food producing companies, scientific societies, academic groups and consumers. These actions are directed to promote a wider and better offer of healthier food and to regulate publicity. In order to advance in these proposals we need a major investment from public and private resources oriented to promote healthier styles of living, with special emphasis on nutrition and physical activity.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Clean wool colour (CWC) is an important wool price determinant and has been related to suint characteristics, i.e. sudoriparous and sebaceous gland secretions, such as suint percentage and suint K content. In this work heritability, phenotypic and genetic correlations among wool colour and skin traits were examined. The genetic estimates were assessed by Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) procedures using average information algorithm (AIREML) in a Corriedale flock. The traits analysed were wool colour traits (CWC), yellow predictive colour (YPC), and Visual Score; suint traits such as suint percentage and potassium and sodium concentrations in suint, and physiological traits such as potassium and sodium concentrations in the skin, including plasma and red blood cells. The objectives of this study were to assess phenotypic and genetic correlations between wool colour and skin traits, and to find the suitability of these traits as indirect selection criteria for clean wool colour. Suint traits were highly genetically correlated to YPC. Suint K, but not suint percentage, was found to have a high genetic correlation with CWC. Skin K, Visual Score, YPC and suint K were amongst the best indirect selection criteria for clean wool colour. However, selection using these traits was expected to reduce CWC from 52 percent to 49 percent of that estimated under direct selection

ABSTRACT

The potential of greasy wool colour subjective assessment Visual Colour Score (VCS) and the yellow predictive test (YPC) as indirect selection criteria for reduction of clean wool colour (CWC) in Corriedale sheep was examined. The heritability of these wool colour traits and the wool production traits, greasy (GFW) and clean fleece weights (CFW), and mean fibre diameter (MFD) and the phenotypic and genetic correlations among these traits were estimated from a Corriedale flock using AIREML procedures. A high genetic correlation between YPC and CWC was observed, indicating that YPC could be a suitable indirect selection criterium for CWC. However, direct selection against CWC was predicted to produce faster genetic improvements in CWC than that expected under indirect selection via YPC. Single trait selection based on VCS or YPC were expected to reduce the response in CWC to 51 per cent and 49 per cent of that estimated for direct selection. The positive genetic correlations of CWC, YPC and VCS with CFW and MFD would cause a reduction in both MFD and CFW to result from selection that reduces wool colour. The results showed that the most effective way to genetically improve CWC was through indirect selection to reduce MFD, CFW or GFW, followed by direct selection, but the premiums for CWC in the Corriedale breed may not be sufficient to justify the expected losses in CFW

ABSTRACT

Background: The higher life expectancy of the Chilean population has required a greater concern about health and nutrition of elderly people. Aim: To assess the alimentation of people over 65 years old, living in communities of the Metropolitan Region with high social vulnerability. Material and methods: A random and representative sample of 257 elders living in the poorest communities of Santiago was studied. They were interviewed in their homes about feeding patterns, the alimentation of the day before and their nutritional status. Mean energy and nutrient consumption and their fitting to FAO/WHO energy and National Research Council micronutrient recommendations were calculated. A feeding quality index, that considers the adequacy of consumption of all nutrients, was calculated. Results: Except for bread, median consumption of all groups of foods was below recommendations. Median energy and protein consumption was 1438 Kcal and 53.9 g in men and 1118 Kcal and 37.7 g in women. Adequacy of consumption of all nutrients was low and the intake of energy, protein, calcium, iron and folate was significantly lower in women than in men. The factors associated with feeding quality in these subjects were a last meal of the day before different from supper, more than 15 hours of morning fasting and sex. Conclusions: Alimentation of elders living in poor communities of Santiago is severely deficient. Focalized intervention models to improve this situation should be devised

ABSTRACT

A non-randomly selected group of 859 adults (410 men) from 120 health care centers of the National Health System (oct. 1995) was studied. Food intake was assessed by 24 hours recall applied by well-trained standarized nutritionists. Both frequency and food and nutrients intake were calculated. The mean age was 35.8ñ10.6 years old. Median energy, protein and fat intake in male were 2324 kcal, 84g y 70g, respectively. For women, medians intake were: 1668 kcal, 59g and 53g respectively. From the total sample 72 percent, 53 percent y 71 percent reported consumption of less than 2 servings of milk product, vegetables and fruits. Likewise 42, 36 and 22 percent of subjects had calcium, vitamin A and C intake below than 50 percent of the corresponding recommended dietary allowances (RDA). On the other hand 24 percent of the sample had daily salt consumption higher than 5g, 37 percent had energy intake derived from fat higher than 30 percent of total calories and 15 percent had more than 10 percent of the energy supplied by sugar. A significant part of the adult population had inadequate patterns of food intake which confirms the need to promote a healthier diet
